Paris 2024 Olympics: Cybersecurity and Organised Crime Pose Unprecedented Challenge

As Paris gears up for the 2024 Olympics, there's a big concern looming: cybersecurity. Organizers are bracing for intense pressure this summer as the Games draw near.

The main threats? Organized crime, activists, and even states themselves. From July 26 to August 11, the Olympics will take place, followed by the Paralympics from August 28 to September 8.

To tackle this challenge head-on, Paris 2024 has teamed up with the French national agency for information security (ANSSI) and cybersecurity firms Cisco and Eviden. Together, they're working to minimize the impact of cyber attacks.

Vincent Strubel, ANSSI's director general, acknowledges the impossibility of preventing all attacks. "There won't be Games without attacks, but we have to minimize their effects on the Olympics," he stated to reporters.

With 500 sites, including competition venues and local organizations, Paris 2024 has conducted comprehensive testing to shore up vulnerabilities. Strubel is optimistic, affirming that the Games will operate from a secret location equipped with a cybersecurity operation center.

"The threat level is unprecedented, but so is our level of preparation," Strubel asserted. "I believe we're ahead of the attackers."

To ensure readiness, Paris 2024 has employed "ethical hackers" to stress-test their systems. Additionally, they're leveraging artificial intelligence to distinguish between minor disruptions and potential catastrophes.

Franz Regul, IT managing director at Paris 2024, highlighted the role of AI. "It helps us differentiate between a nuisance and a catastrophe," he explained.

With expectations of cyber events increasing tenfold compared to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Paris 2024 is leaving no stone unturned in securing the Games.
