NEW DELHI: The Lok Sabha Secretariat issued a comprehensive circular outlining stringent measures against the 49 opposition MPs who have been suspended. These measures encompass various aspects of their parliamentary duties, significantly impacting their roles and responsibilities within the legislative body.

The suspended MPs are now prohibited from accessing the Parliament chamber, as well as its lobby and galleries. This restriction also extends to their involvement in the sessions of Parliamentary Committees to which they belong. Any business attributed to them or notices put forward by these MPs will not be considered during the duration of their suspension.

According to the circular, "No notice proposed by these MPs will be entertained during their suspension period. They are also ineligible to participate in committee elections during this time."

Additionally, the circular specifies that these MPs will not receive their daily allowance for the duration of their suspension. This decision aligns with the regulations outlined in the Salary, Allowances, and Pensions of Members of Parliament Act, 1954. Consequently, their stay at their designated place of duty cannot be classified as residence on duty under this Act.

A total of 141 MPs have been suspended, comprising 95 from the Lok Sabha and 46 from the Rajya Sabha. This sweeping suspension has exacerbated the parliamentary crisis, particularly at a critical juncture when crucial bills were being presented and passed with limited discussion. BJP MP Hema Malini attributed the suspension to the opposition lawmakers' persistent questioning.

The primary bone of contention stems from the Opposition's demand for Union Home Minister Amit Shah to issue a statement in Parliament. They are calling for a discussion on the recent security breach incident that occurred on December 13, wherein intruders breached the Lok Sabha and released smoke canisters.

In response to the suspension, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced plans for a nationwide protest scheduled for December 22.
