Stories stated in our Hindu mythology books, teach us lessons for liveliness. Like that, a story that teaches to avoid the act of betrayal, which would lead to punishments if one's breaks the trust of others. This story is from 'Skanda Purana'.

In the Chandra dynasty, there was a famous Maharaja named Nanda, who was a religious person. He had a son, named Dharmagupta. Nanda gave the responsibility of protecting the state to his son and went to the forest to indulge in austerity. Dharmagupta took over the throne as his father went to the forest. He ruled over the state piously and practised by laying down policies with 'Dharmashastra'. King Dharmagupta conducted 'Yagyas' to appease Indra and other gods. He donated lands, money, ornaments and other precious gems to Brahmins. During his rule, people followed their religion rigorously. No act of robbery or thievery was seen in his kingdom. One day King Dharmagupta was riding on a horse to the forest, the king praised god with evening prayer, sat at one place, and chanted mantras of Ved Mata Gayatri.

During the night, he sat on a tree with fear of wild animals. A bear came fearing a lion who followed him. The bear climbed the tree with the fear of being eaten. The bear sees Dharmagupta sitting on a tree. Seeing him bear proclaims - Maharaj! Do not be afraid, we both will stay up here overnight so a lion won't harm us. You can sleep till midnight, I will protect you. After that, when I sleep, you protect me. Dharmagupta fell asleep after listening to the bear. Then Lion asked the bear to knock down the king from the tree while he is asleep, he then says that the betrayer has to suffer a lot in the world. The sins of a person are not destroyed by the ritual of 10 thousand 'Yagyas' who cheats his friends. He yells "The weight of Mount Meru on this earth is not much in comparison to those who are treacherous, their sins are the highest on this earth. Lion becomes silent after listening to bear, meanwhile, Dharmagupta is awake and bears sleep."

Now, Lion asks the king to bring down the bear. The king drops that bear down from his lap. But the bear did not fall, he gets caught in the branch of the tree and got hung by. He got angry and said to Dharmagupta "I am a Wishful meditation monk, born in Bhriguvansh. I changed my appearance and took the form of a bear. I did not commit any crime against you, then why did you try to bring me down from the tree at bedtime? Then that monk cursed King Dharmagupta that you will soon become a psychotic person. King Dharmagupta received the penalty of treachery with the monk.
