Nigeria: 51 civilians and 18 security personnel lost their lives in violence that erupted after several days of peaceful protests against police vandalism in Nigeria, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari reported. He attributed the "violence" and said that the security forces are working with "utmost restraint". The President's remarks are increasing tensions in this country with the largest population of Africa. The human rights organization Amnesty International said that the soldiers fired Tuesday night and at least 12 protesters lost their lives. The incident is being condemned at the international level.
Buhari said in a statement that till Thursday, rioters killed 11 policemen and 7 soldiers and this period of unrest is not stopped. He said another 37 civilians have been injured. The President said that the miscreants have been captured on the demonstration which started with the right intention. It has been revealed that though many people have expressed disappointment over the President's statement. "When the soldiers were saying that the flag was not a defence, I understood that the situation was coming out of hand," said an eyewitness to Tuesday night's firing. Earlier this month, protesters demanded the government to abolish the special anti-robbery squad.
This police unit is called the SARS unit. The squad was launched to deal with crime, but Amnesty International says it acted to harass and murder people.
