Traffic jams on roads are an everyday thing; however, if one finds it on the world's highest peak, then it's surely surprising. A photo of a long queue on the edge of the Mount Everest has surfaced on the internet.

The viral picture which shows a long line of trekkers waiting to summit the peak has left many people stunned. The route was congested with about 320 climbers.

The photo was shared by British mountaineer Nirmal Purja on his Instagram handle with a caption that read, "On 22nd of May, I summited Everest at 5:30 am and Lhotse 3:45 pm despite the heavy traffic (roughly 320 people)."

It did not take much time for the picture to go viral across social media platforms. The photo has raised a debate on the environmental effects of the "traffic jam" on the world's highest peak. While many would have thought the Everest to be a calm and serene place isolated from the crowds of urban areas, this photo shows the stark reality.

While one user said, "This seems like some strange visual metaphor for climate change." Another wrote, "This is actually heartbreaking to see, there needs to be a limit not just for the beauty and respect of Everest but for the safety of those wanting to do it."

A third user joked, "Looks like people are standing in a queue for Mumbai local." The viral photo has also raised concerns regarding the safety of trekkers on the journey. Reportedly, seven climbers, including three Indians, died on Everest this week.
