Srinagar: Thousands of local people staged protests in the Hunja area of Gilgit-Baltistan of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) demanding release of political activists jailed since 2011. These political activists were arrested for rioting and causing damage to public property.

Many political activists, including Awami Workers Party leader Baba Jan, have been given life imprisonment by an anti-terrorism court. These people were arrested for protesting after the death of a person and his child in police firing. The protesters were demanding that the government be compensated for the losses caused by the police firing. In fact, the local people had suffered a lot due to the flooding of the Hunza River and they were protesting to demand compensation.

Meanwhile, the police opened fire and one person and his child were killed. Both these people were residents of Gojal Valley. After this assassination, people had flared up in the area and started demonstrating. Baba Jaan and several other people of the area were arrested by the police to stop the demonstrations.
