Periyar Row: PM Modi and MHA asked the states to take necessary measures

West Bengal:  In the heated row to vandalize statues of great leaders, Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mukherjee's bust vandalized in Jadavpur University.

Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was an Indian politician, barrister, and academician, who served as Minister for Industry and Supply in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet.

A day after a statue of Dravidian idol Periyar was also smashed up in Vellore district in Tamil Nadu and the Bharatiya Janata Party's office in Coimbatore was attacked by unknown troublemaker on Wednesday. A petrol bomb was hurled at the office and a police inquiry in the matter was underway. The unpleasant incident happened hours after the police detained two people – a BJP worker and a CPI worker- for allegedly vandalizing the Periyar statue on Tuesday.

MHA has asked the states that they must take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents.

“Persons indulging in such acts must be sternly dealt with & booked under relevant provisions of law, “Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said.

Incidents of toppling of statues have been reported from certain parts of the nation. MHA has taken serious notes of such incidents of vandalism. PM Narendra Modi also spoke to HM in this regard & has expressed his strong disapproval of such incidents.
