New Delhi: The Supreme Court, the country's highest court, dismissed without hearing a petition seeking a direction to increase the smoking age from 18 to 21 and ban the sale of cigarettes in the open. Not only this, a two-member bench of the Supreme Court while commenting on this matter said that arguing a good case, do not file a petition for publicity.

On Friday, a two-member bench of the apex court comprising Justice SK Kaul and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia dismissed the plea filed by the two lawyers. The Supreme Court dismissed the petition saying, 'If you want publicity, then debate a good case... don't file a petition in the interest of publicity.'

A PIL was filed in the Supreme Court by advocates Shubham Awasthi and Sapta Rishi Mishra. The petition sought directions from the Supreme Court to control smoking. Along with this, the petition had also sought directions to remove smoking areas from commercial places besides banning the sale of cigarettes in the open near educational, health institutions and places of worship.
