LOS ANGELES: The Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine was 73 percent effective in protecting children ages six months through four years during the time when the Omicron strain was highly prevalent, Pfizer has announced. "In children under five, Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccination is 73 percent effective" it said.

Pfizer in its statement said, "the Covid-19 vaccine developed by BioNTech and Pfizer was 73 percent successful in preventing the Omicron strain in children between the ages of 6 months and 4 years during this period". Pfizer-vaccine BioNTech's was administered in three 3-g doses to research participants, or a placebo. In infants aged six months to four years old who had no signs of a prior Covid-19 infection, vaccine efficacy was reported to be 73.2 percent.

On June 17, the US Food and Drug Administration authorised the vaccine Emergency Use Authorization for this age range.

We are also developing an Omicron BA.4/BA.5-adapted bivalent vaccine in this age group to address these sublineages, according to Ugur Sahin, CEO and Co-Founder of BioNTech. "While these results confirm that three 3-g doses of our Covid-19 vaccine provide young children with a high level of protection at a time when the Omicron BA.2 strain was highly prevalent with a favourable safety profile, we are also developing an Omicron BA.4/BA.5.
