New Delhi: A PIL has been filed in the Supreme Court today in connection with the suicide of a minor girl studying in a school in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu by consuming poison. The petition seeks an inquiry into the root causes of Lavanya's suicide. At the same time, the apex court has been asked to direct the central government to immediately enact a strong anti-conversion law as the fraudulent and forcible conversion is violative of Articles 14, 21, 25 of the Constitution. Madras High Court has already ordered a CBI inquiry into the Lavanya case.
17-year-old Lavanya, fed up with the hostel warden, consumed poison and died on January 19. A few days before committing suicide, the student had said in a video that she was constantly scolded in the hostel and was also asked to clean all the rooms in the hostel. Not only this, but the student had also said that she was also forced to convert to Christianity continuously.
The case of the school girl's suicide has been in constant discussion. Angry over the entire issue, the students also staged a violent protest outside Tamil Nadu Bhawan in Delhi. The silence of the Stalin government in this whole matter is also raising many questions. Lavanya's family has said earlier that they have no faith in the Tamil Nadu police's investigation.
