Bhubaneswar: A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court regarding the painful train accident in Balasore, Odisha. The petition has sought an inquiry by an expert panel headed by a retired judge of the apex court. At least 288 people were died and over 1,000 injured when two passenger trains and a goods train collided in Balasore.

According to the report, the petition filed in the Supreme Court has sought guidelines for fitting an automatic train protection system called Automatic Train Protection System in Indian Railways with immediate effect to ensure public safety. In case the loco pilot fails to handle the speed, 'Kavach' automatically controls the speed of the train by applying brakes.

Advocate Vishal Tiwari has filed a PIL in the apex court. The petition has demanded that "the current risk and safety parameters in the railway system be analysed and reviewed, suggestions should be made for systematic safety modifications to strengthen the railway safety mechanism, an expert commission headed by a retired Judge of the Supreme Court, consisting of technical members, should be constituted immediately."
