Ahmedabad: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal visited Gujarat for 2 days from August 21. Here he met a family living in Patan who are preserving a special art 900 years old. This is the only family in India, which does the work of weaving Patola Sarees. The price of Patola saree made in Patan starts from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 4 lakh. It is said that in the 12th century, King Kumarpal of the Solanki dynasty called 700 patola weavers from Jalna in Maharashtra to settle in Patan and thus the practice of Patan Patola began. The king used to wear only Patola silk straps on special occasions. Patola art is so precious that even in 1934, the cost of a Patola sari was Rs 100.

Bharatbhai Salvi, who made the same patola, told that the entire work of the patola sari is done by hand. It is a handicraft and not a handloom. The process of making Patola saree is very difficult but for those people who do not know this art. If a single thread gets thrown from here to there, then the whole saree gets spoiled. Computerized machines or power looms cannot be used to make this saree. For this, experienced and steady hands are needed. Salvi told that this saree is ready in about 4 to 6 months. Its price ranges up to Rs 4 lakh. The most special thing is that the original Patola saree made from pure silk is made in the whole world only in Patan, Gujarat. The business of this saree is run on orders only.

Bharatbhai said that Patola sarees are made by tying, dyeing and weaving techniques. The biggest feature of the Patola saree is that it can be worn from both sides. This art is called 'Double Ikat' Art. In Double Ikat, the thread is weaved by crossing it both in length and width by trapping it. Double Ikat is also called Mother of All Ikat. Due to this, it becomes difficult to distinguish between which side is straight and which is inverted in a saree. The colour of Patola's saree never fades. This saree lasts for 100 years. Union Minister Piyush Goyal had gone to Patola House in Patan to meet the family. Here he also learned the process of making Patola. However, due to this, he expressed concern that due to the cost of the Patola sari, now it has started becoming fake too. Because of this people are not able to know the real Patola. Piyush Goyal, after meeting Bharatbhai, assured that the government would do everything possible to promote the art of Patola. It will also help in opening a training center to save this art.
