New Delhi: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will be on a three-day visit to the United States. He is going to visit the US next week to resolve bilateral issues related to trade between the two nations. An official source has told the media that Piyush Goyal will arrive in Washington on 12 November and is expected to meet with his American counterpart Robert Lighthizer on 13 November.
This can result in a trade-off contract, as the two sides are close on some key trade issues. On November 14, Goyal will hold a high-level meeting with representatives of trade and industry in New York in which key talks about the industry will take place. Tensions on the trade front between the two nations erupted in June after US President Donald Trump rejected preferential trade privileges, in response to which India imposed tariffs on 28 US products, including almonds and apples.
India was the largest beneficiary of the Normalization System (GSP). GSP is a program designed to help developing countries sell to American consumers. On its part, India also imposed retaliatory tariffs on 25 US goods, following which the Donald Trump administration announced an end to preferential trade practice for India over trade barriers.
