A tragic plane crash in Zimbabwe has claimed the lives of six individuals, including an influential Indian magnate and his son. Harpal Randhawa, a prominent billionaire known for his extensive investments in gold, diamond, and coal mining ventures within Zimbabwe, met his untimely demise in the southern African nation.

The ill-fated journey occurred as Randhawa, who is the proprietor of RioZim, an integrated mining and metallurgical company, was en route from the capital city, Harare, to the Murowa diamond mine located in the southwestern region of Zimbabwe. Tragically, the plane, reportedly belonging to RioZim, crashed in the Zvamahande area near Mashava, resulting in the loss of all six occupants aboard, comprising four foreigners and two Zimbabwean nationals, according to reports from the state-run Sunday Times newspaper.

Authorities suspect that a mechanical fault may have triggered the mid-air collision that led to this devastating accident. The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the incident, stating, "The Zimbabwe Republic Police reports a plane crash which occurred on September 29 between 7.30 a.m. and 8 a.m., where six people are confirmed dead." The police further elaborated that the aircraft, bearing white and red colors and marked as Zcam, had departed Harare at 6 a.m. and crashed approximately 6 kilometers from Mashava.

RioZim, previously affiliated with the British-Australian mining conglomerate Rio Tinto, acknowledged the crash and pledged to cooperate with relevant authorities to obtain additional information concerning the incident.

Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), informed local media that they were in the process of gathering further details.

Harpal Randhawa was not only the owner of RioZim but also the founder of GEM Holdings, a private equity firm valued at $4 billion. His sudden passing has left a void in various spheres, and his impact is remembered by journalist and filmmaker Hopewell Chin’ono.
