New Delhi: The controversy over the Pegasus espionage case continues to escalate. Now the Commission of Inquiry constituted by the West Bengal government in the case has been challenged in the apex court. The petition said that when the Supreme Court itself is hearing the matter, why did the Mamata government constitute the Commission?

In fact, the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal issued a notification on July 27 setting up a commission led by former Supreme Court Judge Madan B Lokur to probe the Pegasus espionage case. The state government's inquiry committee also includes two retired high court judges. The committee will look into allegations of phone hacking, tracking, and phone recording in West Bengal.

Meanwhile, the NGO Global Village Foundation has filed a petition in the apex court in the case. It says, "When the Supreme Court itself is hearing the matter, why was the Commission constituted?" The petition sought quashing of the July 27 notification of the West Bengal government. The petition also sought an order banning the commission.
