2,500-year-old monastery in danger of collapse, 'Joshimath' case moves SC

Dehradun: The matter of landslides in the ancient city of Joshimath and surrounding areas of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand has reached the Supreme Court. In this regard, Jagadguru Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati Maharaj of Jyotishpeeth filed a PIL in the apex court on Saturday (January 7). Advocate Parmeshwar Nath Mishra has said in his petition that more than two and a half thousand years old monastery has also come under the grip of landslides. This has spread panic in the entire area. Therefore, the Supreme Court should issue an order to implement quick measures for this. Order the government to take immediate action.

Jagadguru Shankaracharya, while talking to the media, said that there have also been cracks in the walls and floor of the monastery. Due to this byproduct of development plans, the existence of this historical, cultural, and ancient heritage is jeopardized. The petition has sought to declare the area as a national calamity to ensure the safety of public property and to deal with incidents like landslides, and land explosions. It has been requested to order the Centre and the National Disaster Management Authority to take quick and effective steps in this regard.

NTPC and Border Roads Organisation (BRO) should also be ordered to assist in relief operations. The central government, NDMA, Uttarakhand government, NTPC, BRO, and district magistrate of Joshimath district Chamoli have been made parties to the petition. The petition has also urged the court to order the rehabilitation of the affected people as well as financial assistance to them.
