New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday met President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, for the first time after her assumption of office.
Former President Pratibha Devisingh Patil also met President Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan with her daughter. Banwarilal Purohit, the Governor of Punjab and the Administrator of Chandigarh, also met with President today.
Earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Droupadi Murmu's election a "watershed moment" for the country, particularly for the impoverished, marginalised, and oppressed. The entire nation watched with pride as she took her oath, said PM Modi, wishing her a fruitful tenure.
PM Modi also expressed his best wishes to Mumru for a productive presidency. The Prime Minister praised Murmu's inaugural speech, saying she delivered a message of hope and compassion.
Murmu was sworn in as President of India in the Central Hall of Parliament by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana. The 64-year-old defeated opposition presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha to become the first tribal president and the second woman in history.
President Murmu noted in her inaugural address to the nation that she was the first President born in independent India and was honoured to enter office at a time when the country was celebrating 75 years of independence. She further stated that her ascension to the office is not only her own success, but that of all the impoverished in the country, and that it reflects the trust of crores of Indians.
