On 31st October 1984, is the death anniversary of former PM Indira Gandhiji. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid tribute to Indira Gandhi on her 33rd death anniversary. "Tributes to former PM Mrs. Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary," he tweets on his tweeter account

Gandhi was the first female Prime Minister of India and the daughter of the first Prime Minister late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. She was born on November 19, 1917. Indira Gandhi was dead on October 31, 1984, by her bodyguards a few months after she ordered the disruption of the Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar to counter the Punjab rebellion. She held office from January 1966 to March 1977, and again from January 14, 1980, until her death.

Ms. Gandhi had many achievements to her name including the Bharat Ratna award. She was the Chairperson of the National Integration Council of A.I.C.C. and the President of the All India Youth Congress in1956. She became the President of Indian National Congress (INC) in 1959 and served till 1960 and then again from January 1978.

Ms. Gandhi was widely professional for declaring the historic moment of Emergency in India in 1975 for a period of 21 months. This period was often referred to as the 'dark age of independent India.'

Every year, leaders across the country, remember and honor Ms. Gandhi on her death anniversary. Floral tributes are paid at Shakti Sthal, the memorial of Indira Gandhi.
