New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged opposition-ruled states to follow the Centre's lead and lower taxes on peteol and diesel to help people cope with the price spike.

"Last November, the central government decreased the excise duty in order to alleviate the burden of rising petrol and diesel costs. We had also asked states to lower their taxes. Some states slashed taxes and provided incentives to consumers, while others did not "PM Modi stated.

"Maharashtra, West Bengal, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu did not heed the recommendations of the Central Government, and people in these states are saddled with price rises," PM Modi stated, referring to states run by opposition parties.

"These states should now do what they should have done in November, PM Modi said.  By lowering the VAT, you can alleviate the burden on residents "he added. During his interaction with Chief Ministers of many states over the escalating incidence of COVID-19, Prime Minister Modi made these remarks.

The central government slashed excise duties on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 10 correspondingly in November. Following the Center's decision, 25 states and union territories, most of which are run by the BJP or its allies, decreased the VAT on gasoline and diesel to help customers.
