New Delhi: AIUDF leader Badruddin Ajmal triggered a row for his comments on PM Narendra Modi. Ajmal, who represents Dhubri constituency from Assam, said that he is also the part of the grand alliance which wants PM Modi out of the country and added that once the PM is out of power he can open a tea shop and sell pakodas. Ajmal’s statement evoked sharp reactions from the Twitterati who demanded an apology from him for offensive comments on the PM. Last year in December, Ajmal abused a TV journalist and threatened to break his head after he was questioned about poll alliances for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The event took place when Ajmal was addressing a press conference in Salmara South district where he said that he will support the grand alliance of opposition parties to ensure BJP’s defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections after which the journalist asked whether he will switch sides once the elections are over.

Here it is to be noted that a perfume trader by profession, Ajmal formed All India United Democratic Front in 2005 and within a short span of time his party became the main opposition party by 2011 after winning 18 assembly seats and in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the party secured three seats. However, the equation between the AIUDF and the Congress changed after the grand old party went ahead and fielded former legislator Abu Taher Bepari from Dhubri in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls against Ajmal.

However, it is to be noted that Bepari is very popular in the constituency which is Muslim-dominated and this will eventually lead to the division of minority votes. Terming Congress’ decision as “betrayal” Ajmal said that it will lead to the division of anti-BJP votes and blamed local Muslim leaders from the Congress party for opposing the alliance between the two parties. In an interview to the news agency, PTI Ajmal said that the Congress formed alliance with a small party like Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in Jharkhand went against AIUDF in Assam by fielding three candidates. Congress had made its intentions public by going against AIUDF as they want to destroy our party, said Ajmal and added that the party should decide whether BJP is its enemy or AIUDF.
