Prime Minister Narendra Modi has conveyed his warm wishes to Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu and the people of Maldives on the occasion of Eid Al Fitr. PM Modi highlighted the longstanding cultural and civilizational ties between India and Maldives.

The Indian High Commission in Maldives shared PM Modi's message on social media platform X. The commission stated, "On the auspicious occasion of Eid-Al-Fitr, Hon'ble Prime Minister of India @NarendraModi extended warm greetings to His Excellency President of Maldives Dr. @MMuizzu, the Government & the people of the Republic of Maldives."

PM Modi emphasized the values of compassion, brotherhood, and togetherness as essential elements in building a peaceful and inclusive world. Eid ul-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan and the beginning of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

The exchange of greetings between PM Modi and Muizzu comes amidst previously strained relations between India and Maldives. However, in March, Muizzu requested debt relief measures from India, reaffirming India's status as the Maldives' "closest ally." He expressed hope for India's understanding in accommodating debt repayment terms due to significant loans taken by the Maldives over successive governments.
