New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, August 5 congratulated para-powerlifter Sudhir on winning gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games CWG.

"Sudhir had a fantastic start to the CWG 2022 para-sports medal count! He succeeds in earning a prestigious Gold and once more demonstrates his commitment and willpower. On the field, he has constantly displayed strong performance. Best wishes and congratulations for all of for all upcoming endeavours, "PM Modi said in Tweet.

Sudhir clinched the gold medal in the Men's Heavyweight final with the best weight of 212kg on Thursday. At the Commonwealth Games, Sudhir earned India's first gold medal in para-powerlifting. His final score was a Games record 134.5 points for the gold, beating Nigeria's Ikechukwu Obichukwu (133.6 points) by 0.9 points.

Without breaking a sweat, Sudhir successfully attempted a 208 kg lift to open his event, earning 132.0 points. He lifted 212 kg successfully on his second effort, making up for his unsuccessful first attempt and earning 134.5 points. He failed to lift 217 kg on his third and final try, but he still managed to win the gold medal with 134.5 points.

Indian Para-Powerlifters did not succeed in winning a medal earlier in the day. Manpreet Kaur got things going by successfully lifting 87 kg, earning 88.6 points on her initial try. She lifted 88 kg on her second attempt, earning 89.6 points. She failed her most recent attempt to lift 90 kg.

Sakina Khatun, a para-powerlifter, was unable to lift 90 kg on her initial attempt. In her second attempt, Khatun lifted 90 kg successfully, earning 87.5 points.

With totals of 89.6 kg and 87.5 kg, the pair placed barely off the podium. Manpreet Kaur and Sakina Khatun, both from India, place fourth and fifth, respectively.

Parmjeet Kumar began the men's division of his event with a failed effort to lift 165 kg. The Indian lifter tried once more but was unable to lift 165kg. Even in his final effort, he was unable to lift, finishing the situation at the base of the table
