Lucknow: Attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar’ campaign, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Tuesday said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader had now become a ‘chowkidar’ and was no more a ‘chaiwala’.

Mayawati took to Twitter and said that said PM  Modi was a ‘chaiwala’ at the time of last General Elections in 2014 and five years later, he has transformed into a ‘chowkidar’. What a change India is witnessing. She wrote, “After BJP launch 'Mai Bhi Chowkidar' campaign, PM Modi & others added the prefix 'Chowkidar' to their Twitter handles. So now Narendra Modi is Chowkidar & no more a 'Chaiwala' which he was at the time of last LS election. What a change India is witnessing under BJP rule. Bravo! (sic),.”

BSP’s comment came three days after the ruling BJP launched the ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar’ (#MainBhiChowkidar) campaign in a bid to counter the Congress’ relentless ‘chowkidar chor hai’ attack on PM.

The Congress party  has been levelling corruption allegations against the PM over the multi-crore Rafale fighter jet deal, with party president Rahul Gandhi saying the chowkidar had turned into a chor. It may be noted that PM has described himself as the chowkidar (guard/ protector) of the country as well as its interests of people.

After the ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar’ campaign was launched on Saturday, most BJP leaders including PM Modi and party president Amit Shah on Sunday prefixed the word 'chowkidar' to their names in their Twitter profiles.
