Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to Delhi on Saturday, following his two-nation tour to Poland and Ukraine. His visit to Poland marked the first time in 45 years that an Indian Prime Minister visited the country, while the trip to Ukraine was the first ever by an Indian leader.
During his time in Ukraine, PM Modi met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to upholding international law, including respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. They also emphasized the importance of deepening bilateral dialogue on these issues.
India reiterated its stance on resolving conflicts through peaceful means, focusing on dialogue and diplomacy. As part of this commitment, India participated in the Peace Summit for Ukraine held in Switzerland in June 2024. The Ukrainian leadership welcomed India's involvement and looked forward to continued engagement at future peace conferences.
The visit resulted in the signing of four significant agreements between India and Ukraine.
In Poland, Prime Minister Modi held discussions with Polish leader Donald Tusk, and both nations agreed to elevate their relationship to a Strategic Partnership. Their talks also covered the ongoing war in Ukraine and its devastating humanitarian consequences.
Both leaders emphasized the importance of establishing a comprehensive and lasting peace in accordance with international law and the principles of the UN Charter. They expressed their shared concern over the negative global impact of the conflict, particularly on food and energy security in developing nations.
The two leaders strongly opposed any use or threat of nuclear weapons and called for the global community to respect territorial integrity and sovereignty, in line with international law.
India and Poland also condemned terrorism in all its forms, calling for stronger measures to prevent any nation from providing sanctuary to terrorist groups. They highlighted the importance of fully implementing UN resolutions and urged for the early adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT).
Furthermore, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific region, respecting international maritime law and ensuring security and stability for all nations.
