New Delhi: Tributes are being paid to Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, the author of the national anthem 'Vande Mataram' and popular Bengali literature, on his birth anniversary across India today. Speaking on the occasion, PM Narendra Modi paid homage to him and said that Chattopadhyay displayed the greatness of Indian ideas through all his works.

Vande Mataram, composed by him, inspires us to serve the country with humility and empower our fellow Indians". Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was a 19th century scholar, poet and novelist. He composed the national anthem 'Vande Mataram', which was later included in the novel 'Anand Math' in 1882.

He was also a famous Bengali poet and novelist. 'Durgeshnandini' and 'Kapalkundla' are among his early major works. Both novels have also been translated into many other languages. Bankimchandra's novels have been translated into almost all languages of India. The first work of the versatile Chattopadhyay was 'Durgeshnandini'. He also published the monthly magazine 'Bangadarshan' in 1872. Bengali litterateur Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was born on June 27, 1838 in Naihati, West Bengal, to a conservative Bengali Brahmin family.
