New Delhi: On Tuesday, 18 July, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the state-of-the-art terminal building at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This virtual inauguration marks a significant milestone in enhancing connectivity for the union territory. The new integrated terminal, constructed at a cost of approximately Rs.710 crore, spans an impressive built-up area of about 40,800 sqm. It boasts the capacity to handle around 50 lakh passengers annually.
Notably, Port Blair Airport has undergone substantial expansion with the construction of an Apron suited for two Boeing-767-400 and two Airbus-321 aircraft types. This addition, costing Rs.80 crore, enables the parking of ten aircraft simultaneously, further improving the airport's functionality.
Architecturally inspired by nature, the terminal building showcases a captivating shell-shaped design reminiscent of the surrounding sea and islands. It prioritizes sustainability with features such as a double insulated roofing system, harnessing skylights for ample natural sunlight and reduced reliance on artificial lighting. The implementation of LED lighting and low heat gain glazing further enhances energy efficiency.
Embracing eco-conscious practices, the terminal incorporates rainwater catchment in an underground water tank, an on-site sewage treatment plant ensuring 100% reuse of treated wastewater for landscaping purposes, and a 500 KW solar power plant. These eco-friendly initiatives aim to minimize the negative impact on the islands' environment.
Port Blair, serving as the gateway to the pristine Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is a highly sought-after tourist destination. The introduction of this spacious and modern terminal building is expected to significantly bolster air traffic and consequently boost tourism in the region. Moreover, it will create valuable employment opportunities for the local community, contributing to the economic growth of the area.
