MYSURU: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation for projects worth about Rs.488 crores in Mysuru on June 20 as part of a major push to improve rail infrastructure in the city.

Modi will be in Mysuru for two days beginning June 20 to participate in a number of events, including the main programme of the International Day of Yoga, which will be hosted on the palace grounds on June 21.

The long-awaited extension and refurbishment of the Mysuru station would cost Rs.395.73 crore and will include the building of three new platforms. Similarly, Naganahalli will undergo yard remodelling at a cost of Rs.92.07 crore.
The project is projected to serve Mysuru's demands for the next three to four decades, alleviating traffic congestion and allowing for the operation of additional trains.

The present apartments in the railway colony, which are already dilapidated, will be demolished as part of the yard reconstruction and extension of the Mysuru Railway station. They were built more than 60 years ago and are no longer suitable for human occupancy.

The original plan was to build a new terminal for Mysuru on the outskirts of the city, at a cost of about Rs 789 crore. However, the project required 165 acres, and the state government was unwilling to acquire the land, claiming that it would only facilitate the acquisition and was silent on funding the acquisition cost.
