His mother Hiraben used to work in the homes of others at that time. Used to clean people's utensils. She also used to deliver water in private offices. When young Modi wanted to appear in an examination to join the Indian Army, his father did not have the money to send him to Jamnagar. He became a monk due to depression. Modi started living like a monk. At the age of 17, he told his family that he was about to decide to abandon his home in search of the truth. He left home in 1970. He wanted to be a saint.
