Early Discharge of Indians from Russian Army to be Discussed During Modi's Visit to Moscow

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his first visit to Russia since the Ukraine conflict began, will address the issue of the early discharge of Indian nationals from the Russian army, according to Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra.

PM Modi will visit Moscow on July 8-9, 2024, at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, to attend the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit.

"The leaders will review the entire range of multifaceted relations between the two countries and exchange views on contemporary regional and global issues of mutual interest," stated the Ministry of External Affairs.

Following his visit to Russia, PM Modi will travel to Austria from July 9-10. This marks the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Austria in 41 years.

India Balances Relations Amid Russia-Ukraine Conflict and Rising Tensions with China

New Delhi has refrained from explicitly condemning Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, choosing to abstain from United Nations resolutions that censure Moscow. However, the conflict in Ukraine has had significant implications for India.

In February, India announced efforts to push Russia to release its citizens who had signed up for "support jobs" with the Russian military. This move came after reports surfaced that some Indians were forced into combat and subsequently killed in Ukraine.

Additionally, Russia's growing relationship with China has become a point of concern for New Delhi. Meanwhile, the United States and its Western allies have been strengthening ties with India to counter Beijing's expanding influence in the Asia-Pacific region. These allies have also been encouraging India to distance itself from Russia amidst the ongoing geopolitical tensions.
