Bhubaneswar: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Wednesday,  lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to lower the prices of LPG cylinders, framing it as a significant boon for women across the nation.

Pradhan emphasized, "On August 29, the Prime Minister presented a substantial gift to the women of our nation... When PM Modi assumed office in Odisha, LPG connections stood at 20-22 percent. Within the state's 1 crore households, 21 lakh homes possessed LPG connections. This figure has now surged to 96 lakhs, with 53 lakhs of these being provided under the Ujjwala Yojana," he shared during an interaction with journalists.

On Tuesday, the central government announced a Rs 200 reduction in the prices of cooking gas cylinders. The Modi administration characterized this move as a gesture of support to the women of the country, aiming to enhance their quality of life. In contrast, the Opposition swiftly labeled the decision as a 'political ploy'.

Jairam Ramesh, Congress' media spokesperson, expressed on X platform, "...This move arrives three months ahead of five state elections, where the BJP is facing probable defeat, and six months before the Lok Sabha elections. The BJP seems to be resorting to desperate measures. Anticipate more of these 'gifts' in the approaching months as the Prime Minister clings fervently to his position."

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored that the lowered prices of cooking gas cylinders would contribute to the improved well-being of women. In a statement on X, PM Modi remarked, "The occasion of Raksha Bandhan serves to amplify joy within families. The reduction in gas prices is aimed at enhancing the comfort of the sisters within my extended family, thereby facilitating their lives. I extend my heartfelt wishes for the happiness and health of all my sisters."

Effective from Wednesday, the cost of a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder will witness a nationwide deduction of Rs 200. For instance, in Delhi, this decision translates to a reduction in the cost of a 14.2 kg cylinder from the prevailing Rs 1,103 to Rs 903.
