New Delhi: On the occasion of 'Maitri Diwas' being celebrated on December 6 to commemorate India's recognition of Bangladesh in 1971, PM Narendra Modi on Monday said he aspires to continue working with his neighbouring counterpart Sheikh Hasina to further expand relations between the two countries and strengthen bilateral ties.

In a tweet, PM Modi said, "Today India and Bangladesh are celebrating 'Maitri Diwas'. We remember and celebrate the foundation of our 50 years of friendship together. I look after continuing my work with PM Sheikh Hasina to further expand and deepen our relationship.' External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in a tweet, "We are celebrating the 50th year of Bangladesh being recognized as an independent country. The 'India-Bangladesh Friendship', which has been built with shared sacrifices during the liberation war, is leading bilateral relations to a golden chapter after completing a 50-year journey.'

Bagchi said the two countries are celebrating Maitri Diwas this year under the leadership of PM Modi and PM Sheikh Hasina. PM Modi visited Bangladesh in March this year, where he attended the national day function of the neighbouring country and it was decided to celebrate December 6 as 'Maitri Diwas'. 10 days before Bangladesh's liberation, India recognized Bangladesh as an independent country on December 6, 1971. India was among the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Bangladesh.
