New Delhi: The rail route between India and Bangladesh is going to be re-opened after 55 years. PM Narendra Modi and Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the rail route on December 17 between Haldibari in West Bengal and Chilhati in the neighbouring country Bangladesh. The authorities of the Northeast Frontier Railway have informed about this.

The railway line from Haldibari in Behar to Chilhati in northern Bangladesh was damaged after rail connectivity between India and then East Pakistan was broken in 1965. NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Suban Chanda said PM Narendra Modi and Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina will launch the Haldibari-Chilhati rail route on December 17. Suban Chanda said that a goods train will run from Chirhti on Haldibari route, which is under the Katihar division of NRF. Katihar Divisional Railway Manager Ravindra Kumar Verma said that the Railway Ministry has informed the authorities about the decision to reopen the rail route on Tuesday.

Nfr sources said that the distance of Haldibari railway station from the international border is 4.5 km, while the distance of Chilhati in Bangladesh is about 7.5 km from zero point. Both Haldibari and Chilhati stations were on the old broad gauge railway route between Siliguri and Kolkata, passing through the existing Bangladesh areas.
