Kohima: Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly Vikho-o-Yoshu died late Monday in a private hospital in Mumbai. His family members informed that he had been battling lung cancer for the past several months. He was 67. PM Narendra Modi has paid tribute to Yoshu by tweeting. PM Modi has tweeted that "I am deeply saddened by the demise of the Speaker of Nagaland Assembly Vikho-o-Yoshu." He was a hardworking leader who devoted his life to the progress of Nagaland. He said that my thoughts are with his family and supporters in this hour of grief. may his soul rest in peace.''

Earlier this year, Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) leader Yoshu was diagnosed with lung cancer after which he was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mumbai. He is survived by his wife and 10 children. He told that Yoshu's body will be brought to Nagaland via plane on Tuesday. Yoshu was elected to the assembly three times from the southern Angami-1 constituency in Kohima district. In 2008 and 2013, he won on the Naga People's Front (NPF) ticket and served as an advisor and parliamentary secretary in several departments. He joined the NDPP just before the 2018 assembly elections.

He won the South Angami-1 seat for the third consecutive time in 2018 and was elected speaker of the state assembly. Governor RN Ravi and CM Neiphiu Rio have mourned the death of Yoshu. The governor said that with the death of Vikho-o Yoshu, the Nagaland people lost a big and distinguished leader.
