New Delhi: Today is the birth anniversary of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and one of the main ideal of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Many Union ministers and other BJP leaders including PM Modi paid tribute to Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on the occasion. PM Modi tweeted "On the birth anniversary of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, I bow to him. He was a true patriot who played an important role in the development of India. He contributed for the unity of the country and his thoughts inspire millions."

A public meeting will be organized on behalf of the BJP today through video conferencing. BJP president JP Nadda will address a public meeting in the party headquarters. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was born on 6 July 1901 in a Bengali family. He did his primary education in Bengal. He went to England to study further and studied barrister. Returning to India, he became involved in political activities.

Became a part of the Congress around 1930 and as a part of the political movement before independence. But soon after, he became disenchanted with the Congress and became part of the Hindu Mahasabha around 1940. The country's first PM Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru made Shyama Prasad Mukherjee a minister in his cabinet.
