Manila: Police reported Monday that at least 72 people have died by drowning in the Philippines since the beginning of the month, attributing the unusually high number in part to the thousands of people flocking to the beaches for Holy Week.

Millions of people typically leave Manila, the nation's capital, during the holiday season to spend time with their families, which is a Catholic-majority country.

Col. Jean Fajardo, a spokeswoman for the Philippine National Police, claimed that the high death toll was partly caused by "revenge travel" as the nation ended years of mobility restrictions to fight the coronavirus.

People became a little more eager to visit resorts and beaches, according to Fajardo. Fajardo said the victims included children who were left unattended by guardians while swimming, as well as people who hit the beaches while intoxicated. A breakdown of the fatalities was not immediately available.

The death toll, according to Fajardo, was "unusual" and higher than in prior years. Beaches and resorts were crowded. This also influenced the quantity of drowning incidents, she continued.
