Police Encounter in Assam: 3 Suspected Hmar Militants Killed, Officers Injured

CACCHAR-ASSAM: In a significant operation early Wednesday, police in Cachar district, Assam, engaged in a fierce encounter that resulted in the deaths of three suspected Hmar militants. The incident also left several police officers injured, highlighting the ongoing security challenges in the region.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the operation, stating, "@cacharpolice eliminated 3 Hmar militants believed to be from Assam and neighbouring Manipur. The police recovered 2 AK rifles, 1 rifle, and 1 pistol during the operation."

A senior official from Assam Police Headquarters in Guwahati informed PTI about the injuries sustained by police personnel. "While the exact nature of injuries is yet to be confirmed, some officers have been injured. We await further details from the Cachar district police," the official added.

According to sources, the police had apprehended three militants on Tuesday night in East Dholai Ganganagar. "The militants were traveling in an autorickshaw, where police discovered the seized arms. The police subsequently conducted a morning operation in the Bhaban Hills area to locate other insurgents, leading to the encounter," the sources disclosed.

During the intense hour-long gunfight, three militants were killed, and three policemen sustained bullet injuries. "All injured personnel have been admitted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for medical treatment," sources confirmed.

The Cachar Superintendent of Police, Numal Mahatta, along with other senior officials, promptly responded to the scene, underscoring the seriousness of the incident.

The encounter underscores the ongoing efforts by security forces to maintain peace in Assam amidst challenges posed by militant activities.
