Vatican City/New Orleans: Pope Francis expressed profound sorrow over the horrific attack that took place during New Year celebrations in New Orleans, Louisiana, where a truck rammed into a crowd, leaving several dead and many injured. A message of condolences was sent on behalf of the Pope by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin to Archbishop Gregory Aymond of New Orleans.

In his message, Pope Francis shared his heartfelt prayers for the victims and their families. He emphasized his deep compassion for the wounded and those grieving the loss of their loved ones. The Pope entrusted the departed souls to the mercy of God and extended his blessings as a sign of solidarity in these tragic times.

Details of the Attack

The attack occurred in the early hours of January 1 in the French Quarter of New Orleans, a popular area bustling with celebrations. The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Shamsuddin Jabbar, a Texas native and former US Army veteran, drove a rented pickup truck at high speed into a crowd gathered to celebrate the New Year.

Authorities confirmed that Jabbar was killed in an exchange of gunfire with the police shortly after the incident. The FBI revealed that an Islamic State (ISIS) flag was found inside the vehicle. Officials suspect that the act was inspired by extremist ideology, as stated by President Joe Biden.

Casualties and Investigation

The gruesome attack claimed the lives of 15 individuals and left 35 others injured. Local law enforcement, along with federal agencies, is conducting an in-depth investigation. Authorities suspect that Jabbar may not have acted alone and are pursuing leads to determine if other individuals were involved.

Possible Link to Las Vegas Incident

On the same day, a Tesla Cybertruck burst into flames outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, resulting in the driver’s death and injuries to seven others. The FBI is investigating whether this incident was an act of terrorism and exploring possible connections between the two attacks.

A Call for Unity

As investigations continue, the New Orleans community and global leaders have condemned the attacks and called for solidarity in combating terrorism. Pope Francis' heartfelt message resonates with the collective need for compassion and healing in the aftermath of such tragedies.
