American novelist and playwright Gertrude Stein was a creative force. Born on February 3, 1874, she acted as a catalyst in the development of modern art and literature. As a Jew living in Nazi-occupied France, Stein's activities during World War II have been the subject of intense discussion and analysis. Often considered a rebel, she led the life on her own terms and refused to adhere to conventions.
