Prakash was born on February 27, 1952, in Bettiah, Bihar. After his schooling, he came to Delhi to pursue graduation. He wanted to become a painter in his childhood, however, destiny has its own plan. He went to Mumbai. He once got a chance to see the shooting of the film Dharma and decided to become a filmmaker.  He was then took admission in the Film and Television Institute in 1973. However, his journey was full of struggles.

The filmmaker came to Mumbai with only 300 Rs in his hands. He even spend many nights at the footpath After leaving home and coming to Mumbai, Prakash Jha was struggling to get a job. After spending some time his 300 rupees were also over. Due to not having a good relationship with his parents, he was unable to ask for help from them as well. Se he had to spent many nights on the footpath of Juhu Beach in Mumbai. However, he got a chance in the film and from then there is no looking back.

You might get shocked by hearing this but Prakash Jha was once married to the famous actress Deepti Naval. The duo got married in the year 1985. After marriage, both adopted a daughter named Disha. However, after 17 years of marriage, both decided to separate their ways and divorced.
