NEW DELHI: Former President and Bharat Ratna laureate Pranab Mukherjee has given a piece of advice to foreign media. Advising the foreign media, he first visited the country, met the people and presented a picture of India after seeing things from his own eyes. Addressing an event to honor foreign journalists with the Kalinga-FCC Award, the former President said, "The role of media in a democracy is that of the watchdog. It should not only present the good and bad sides of the society but should also allow positive changes.'
The former President said, "I request you and encourage you to present a picture of India which comes to the world through you, after visiting our country, meeting people and observing things yourself." Mukherjee said the media should also mention positive things in the news. During the visit, Mukherjee felicitated media professionals reporting on India and South Asia for global media.
There are more than 700 journalists at the Foreign Correspondents Club in South Asia. Most of them work for foreign media organizations. In his speech, former President Mukherjee said, media is the fourth pillar of democracy and it has a lot of powers. Because it tries to make the other three pillars, the Executive, the Judiciary and the Legislature accountable.
The media also acts as a mediation between the public and the public servants. It has the power to shape public opinion. It also has the power to ensure social justice and equality, but also ensure that this power is not misused. Recently, foreign media had made a lot of negative reporting on the Kashmir issue.
