HS Prannoy took a dig at the Badminton Association of India (BAI) for not sending his name for the National Sports Award on June 2. However, the national team's head coach Pullela Gopichand sent Prannoy's name for the Arjuna Award on June 3. Gopichand told IANS, "I sent his nomination on June 3". Earlier, Prannoy had raised questions on the Arjuna Award parameters when his name was not sent. To this, Prannoy tweeted, "Same old story. Those who won medals at Commonwealth Games and Asian Championships were not nominated by the association. The player who was in these tournaments was not even nominated. Wow. This country is a joke. "
Former World No-1 Kidambi Srikanth and Prannoy left the team even after BAI refused the Asian Badminton Championships held in Manila in February this year, which led to India's hope of winning a medal and that is why BAI had given both the notices. India had to face Indonesia in the semi-finals. After this, BAI decided not to nominate both for the Sports Award. Srikanth apologized unconditionally on this and after that, he was nominated for Khel Ratna. BAI issued a statement on Friday stating that after Srikanth's apology, he was nominated for Khel Ratna while Pranaut has been given 15 days' notice. BAI general secretary Ajay Singhania said in a statement, "We have received an email from Srikanth acknowledging his mistake and he has also said that he will not do so further. In view of Srikanth's talent and achievements, we have nominated him for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna. "
Singhania said, "There are many disciplinary issues with Prannoy. The federation has been very tolerant of him so far, but recently his attitude forced BAI to take action against him." He said, "Show cause notice has been sent to them. If players do not send their reply in due time, then BAI will take action against them." Earlier, BAI nominated Satwiksairaj Ranki Reddy and Chirag Shetty besides Sameer Verma for the Arjuna Award. Prannoy then questioned it and said that the players who won nothing have been nominated for National Awards and those who won medals in Commonwealth Games and Asian Championships have been ignored.
