President Droupadi Murmu commended the Modi government for providing a dignified life to families who suffered due to the Partition by granting them Indian nationality under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Speaking to a joint session of both Houses of Parliament after the 18th Lok Sabha was constituted, President Murmu emphasized the positive impact of the CAA on refugees.

President Murmu highlighted that the Modi government has begun granting citizenship to refugees under the CAA, stating, "It has ensured a dignified life for many families who have suffered due to the Partition. I wish a better future for the families who have been granted citizenship under the CAA."

The initial set of citizenship certificates under the CAA was issued to 14 individuals in Delhi on May 15. Subsequently, the Union government extended citizenship to refugees in West Bengal, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and other parts of India.

Enacted in December 2019, the CAA was designed to grant Indian citizenship to persecuted Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi, and Christian migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan who arrived in India on or before December 31, 2014. Although the act received the president's assent shortly after its enactment, the rules for granting citizenship were issued more than four years later on March 11.
