Mumbai: On Tuesday, The imposition of President's rule in Maharashtra is the first such incident in the 59-year history of the state, when Article 356 was used after political parties could not form the government after the assembly elections. Overall, this is the third time President's rule has been imposed in Maharashtra. Present Maharashtra came into existence on 1 May 1960.

The assembly elections in Maharashtra were held on October 21 and the results were out on October 24. BJP came out as the single largest party with 105 seats, Shiv Sena got 56 seats, NCP 54 and Congress 44 seats. A total of 161 seats were won by the pre-poll alliance partners BJP and Shiv Sena. This was much higher than the 145 figure of majority in the 288-member House. However, the tussle between the two over the CM post has soured both and delayed the government formation.

Last week, the BJP informed Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari that it would not be able to form the government, as it did not have the necessary numbers. The governor then asked the second largest party, the Shiv Sena, to prove his "will and ability" to form the government. On Monday (11 November), the Uddhav Thackeray-led party met the governor and expressed his desire to form the government, but it failed to present a letter of support from other parties to show its required strength.
