To prevent the spread of Coronavirus infection by the West Bengal government, more than 3,000 undertrials and sentenced prisoners are being freed from the prisons of the state. This information was given by the Minister of State Prison Department Ujjwal Biswas on Tuesday.

Regarding the matter, he said that after the outbreak of the Corona virus in the state, the prisoners in various jails are being freed according to the directions of the Supreme Court. On Monday, the work of acquiring 3,076 prisoners of 60 jails has been started. The jail minister said that keeping in mind the ongoing lockdown in the country, the jail administration has sent those people to their respective homes following the norms of social distancing.

Among the prisoners who are freed, 2,059 undertrials include those who have been granted interim bail. Apart from this, 1,017 prisoners who are sentenced are also being freed on parole for three months. Vishwas said that in the number of inmates who are lodged in jails, it is an impossible task to follow the norms of social distancing there. Because there are 2000 prisoners in each jail. The minister said that in view of the present situation of Corona, inmates of each jail are being transported home by different vehicles. All the prisoners will be delivered to the house within the next four-five days.
