Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Sunday expressed concern over the rising unemployment figures and put Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the dock of questions. Presenting the figures of unemployment quoting a news portal, Priyanka Gandhi recently said that, in the last 6 years, the number of suicide cases due to unemployment has increased by 60 per cent. Between 2018-20, an average of 12 people committed suicide every day in the country due to unemployment. Tagging Narendra Modi, she said, "Leave 70 years of rote and talk about real issues. The youth are in pain, how long will they stray from the real issues?'

In fact, according to the February 11 report published in the BBC Hindi, there has been a surge in the number of suicides between 2018 and 2020. A report that came out, citing a study by Professor Ahmed of JNU's School of Computational and Integrative Science, has reported that there has been a 60 per cent increase in suicide cases due to unemployment in six years.

In his report, Professor Ahmed has said that there was not much change from 2014 to 2017, but in 2020, due to unemployment, the cases of suicides increased. The professor has expressed apprehension that if the situation is not taken care of, the problem may become bigger.
