Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Mansukh Mandavia said that production of hydroxychloroquine is more than required in India, so the government has lifted the export ban on it. Mandavia told the media that when the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis started, we had two units producing hydroxychloroquine, now we have 12 and the production is more than required. Therefore, the Indian government lifted the export ban on it. Manufacturers have to sell 20 percent of it in the domestic market. The rest can be exported.

Furthermore, he shared that when the nationwide lockdown was announced, hydroxychloroquine was banned as only two manufacturing units were producing 5 million tablets per day at that time. He further said that today 12 manufacturing units in the country are producing 15 million tablets daily.

In his statement, Mandavia further stated that the Government of India has decided to lift the ban on hydroxychloroquine, its API and formula. All have to be sold 20 percent in the domestic market so that there is no shortage of medicine in the country and said that surplus production can be exported to the global market. Union Minister Sadanand Gowda tweeted on Wednesday that the Pharmaceutical Department has approved the formulation along with banning the export of hydroxychloroquine API. Excluding SEZ / EOU units, manufacturers have to supply 20 percent of production in the domestic market. In this regard, a formal notification was asked to be issued.
