Promises vs Practice: Rahul Gandhi's Commitment to OBCs Questioned Amidst Party Appointments

New Delhi: In a recent move by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, 12 general secretaries and 12 in-charges were appointed, sparking controversy due to the apparent underrepresentation of leaders from the Other Backward Classes (OBC). Out of the newly appointed general secretaries, only one belongs to the OBC category, raising questions about the party's commitment to its earlier promises and assertions regarding OBC rights.

The disparity becomes noteworthy in light of Rahul Gandhi's recent statements advocating for a caste census and increased participation of OBCs in political spheres. During the recent assembly elections, Gandhi had pledged to conduct a caste census in every state, vowing to allocate rights according to the population. However, the current composition of the appointed general secretaries has raised concerns about the party's commitment to fulfilling these promises.

The discrepancy between rhetoric and action is becoming apparent, especially considering the prevalent representation of leaders from upper castes among the appointed officials. Critics argue that if the Congress Party cannot ensure adequate representation for OBCs within its own organizational structure, doubts arise about its ability to deliver on promises once in power.

The situation draws parallels with Congress's governance in states like Karnataka and Telangana, where the party has been accused of prioritizing schemes for minorities over the welfare of OBCs. Instances such as the repeal of the conversion law, the controversy surrounding the Hijab ban, and discussions about lifting the ban on cow slaughter have further fueled skepticism about the party's dedication to OBC concerns.

The appointment changes also include the shift of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from the post of Uttar Pradesh Congress in-charge to the role of General Secretary. Sachin Pilot has been appointed in-charge of Chhattisgarh Congress, and Ramesh Chennithala has been given responsibility for Maharashtra.

The list of leaders appointed as General Secretaries includes Mukul Wasnik, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jitendra Singh, Randeep Singh Surjewala, Deepar Babaria, Sachin Pilot, Avinash Pandey, Kumari Selja, GA Mir, Deepdas Munshi, Jairam Ramesh, and KC Venugopal, with KC Venugopal continuing as the organization general secretary.

Congress President Kharge has also allocated specific state responsibilities, with Ramesh Chennithala taking charge of Maharashtra, Mohan Prakash overseeing Bihar, Chellakumar handling Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh, and Ajoy Kumar leading in Odisha (with additional responsibility for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry). Other appointments include Bharat Singh Solanki (Jammu and Kashmir), Rajeev Shukla (Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh), Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa (Rajasthan), Devender Yadav (Punjab), Manikrao Thackeray (Goa, Daman-Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli), Girish Chodankar (Tripura, Sikkim, Manipur, and Nagaland), Manickam Tagore (Andhra Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar), and Gurdeep Singh Sappal (administrative in-charge), with Ajay Maken continuing as treasurer and Milind Deora and Vijay Inder Singla appointed as joint treasurers.
