Toronto: The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the largest film festival in North America, began on Thursday with the screening of Ben Stiller's family film "Nutcrackers." However, the event faced disruption from a group of pro-Palestinian protesters.

Four demonstrators made their presence known at the Princess of Wales Theatre, chanting against the Royal Bank of Canada, a festival sponsor criticized for its investments in companies linked to Israel amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The protesters’ chants drew mixed reactions from the audience, with some booing and others supporting their cause. Despite the interruption, festival CEO Cameron Bailey proceeded with his introduction, and security eventually escorted the protesters out, allowing the screening to continue.

This year's TIFF marks a return to its usual grandeur after last year's disruptions due to strikes by actors and writers, which limited star appearances. This year, however, the festival is set to feature numerous celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Salma Hayek, Cate Blanchett, and Nicole Kidman, who will be showcasing their latest projects.

Bailey expressed excitement about the festival’s return to form. “Toronto is known for its audience excitement, and that excitement reaches a fever pitch when the biggest stars in the world are here,” he said. “We’re glad that we are having a festival without some of the constraints of last year, although I do think we were able to do the very best we could given the circumstances.”

Stiller’s film, "Nutcrackers," which he introduced with director David Gordon Green, is a holiday-themed comedy about a Chicago real estate developer who ends up caring for his four orphaned nephews. The film explores themes of family and personal growth, with Stiller noting the heartfelt nature of the script.

The festival also features Ron Howard’s highly anticipated survival film “Eden,” set in the Galapagos Islands, and DreamWorks Animation’s latest release, “The Wild Robot.” Angelina Jolie, fresh from her Venice success with “Maria,” is showcasing her new directorial work, “Without Blood,” starring Salma Hayek.

A total of 278 films are scheduled for screening. Among the notable attendees are Andrea Bocelli, Robbie Williams, Paul Anka, and Pharrell Williams, who will appear alongside new documentaries about their careers. Additionally, inspirational sports dramas like “Unstoppable,” featuring Jennifer Lopez, highlight the festival’s diverse offerings.

TIFF runs from Thursday through September 15, culminating in the presentation of the People’s Choice Award. This award often serves as an early indicator of potential Academy Award winners, with past recipients including “Nomadland” and “Green Book.”
