NEW YORK: The shooting of a black man by a white police officer in Michigan's Grand Rapids ignited a series of protests over the past three days.

The protests began on Wednesday after the Grand Rapids Police Department released several videos of an officer's encounter with Patrick Lyoya earlier this month, including two that show the fatal shot during a struggle following a traffic stop,  as per reports citing local media.

Lyoya, a Congolese refugee, was killed in the garden of a Grand Rapids home after a brief chase and battle with the officer, who has not been identified. Following the release of video of the incident, barriers were erected outside the Grand Rapids police station, and hundreds marched downtown, shouting and demanding the department release the name of the officer who shot Lyoya, according to local television station WZZM.

Lyoya has been the subject of numerous protests and marches. Hundreds of people rallied outside a City Commission meeting on Tuesday evening, demanding justice. On Friday, residents of Grand Rapids congregated downtown at Rosa Parks Circle. To make their concerns heard, the group marched downtown to the Grand Rapids Police Department headquarters.

In recent years, protests have erupted across America in response to the deaths of George Floyd and other black males at the hands of police. As per The Washington Post, there have been 255 police shootings in the United States this year.
