Amritsar: Punjab's Bhagwant Mann government has initiated action against schools for raising fees. The Punjab government has ordered an inquiry against 720 schools in the state for increasing the fees even after the order. It is reported that some of these schools had even failed to provide information about additional shops to buy books and dresses. The schools in the state had opposed the decision of the Mann government on the issue of fees.

On March 30, CM Bhagwant Mann issued orders against private schools not increasing fees or forcing parents to buy books from a particular shop. The District Education Officers were directed to ensure compliance with the order. However, many schools had also come out in protest against this decision of the government. He said that legally they could increase the fees by 8 per cent per year.

Interestingly, for some years in Punjab, parents have been opposing the increase in fees on behalf of private schools. At the same time, in the last two years, the matter had taken a toll in the midst of the pandemic. The parents had alleged that private schools were increasing the fees a lot even after classes were running online. Several complaints were also lodged with the state education department against private schools.
